I haven't done much image processing or digital art in the last few years, so it hardly mattered to me that I didn't have a good, solid image processing program like my beloved pre-CS Photoshop to work with. But just lately I've been wanting to work with digital media again, and I went looking for a good (and not terribly pricey) alternative. I knew that PaintShop Pro was a great program; I'd used it for years as an adjunct to Photoshop, but not since Corel bought Ulead, and I have to say I'm impressed with what they've done with an already good program. PSPPX3 is being marketed as a good choice for the "enthusiast." It has far more functionality than most home users will ever need, and less than most professionals are looking for, but given the array of features and the program price point, it's a hella good program for the vast range of users in between those two poles.

PSPPX3 is a fast worker, even with larger size images. I did a lot of work this morning on one that was about 20Mb, and the program didn't falter. I don't know how it'll function at sizes upwards of 40 or 50Mb, but so far so good. Just be sure you have at least the minimum requirements. It has a nice interface, easy to learn and easy to use. Like Photoshop, PaintShop Pro Photo has a lot of layers to explore. You can get the gestalt of the program pretty quickly -- and I have to say that the functions are fairly intuitive with a much lower learning curve than GIMP -- but you will be finding new functionality for a long time after you've become proficient in the program basics. The Organizer tool is first rate, producing fast thumbnail views of your photos so you can choose one or more to send to the editor. Within the organizer you can add a good deal of information about each photo, including rating them from one to five stars based on whatever criteria you choose. From the Organizer you can send your images to either the Express Lab or the Full Editor. The former is a nice, stripped down editor that allows you to do some basic fiddling, and it includes a few auto settings that can help you improve the overall look of your work without a lot of fine tuning. A nice feature you'll find there is the ability to record the edits you do on any given image to apply to any others in your collection, either singly or in a batch. So if you have half a dozen pics that are all slightly under-exposed, for example, fix one and then apply the same fix to all the others at once. I will say that this feature can invite some photo abuse, so use it wisely. However you can avoid disaster by turning on the Auto Preserve Originals feature which will prevent you from accidentally overwriting your original image with one you've edited. Why would you want this? Trust me, if you fiddle with your photos a lot, you will at some point overwrite a good one with a bad one and spend hours kicking yourself over the one that got away.

Crop to new image is also a fantastic time saver for those of us who scan images into the computer. You scan in, say three or four smallish images and then you can crop each one out to its own separate image without a lot of squirreling around creating blank images and pasting the cropped one into it. Also wonderfully useful are the Perspective Correction Tool, High Pass filter and Lens distortion correction filters. I tried each of them on several different images in my collection and they performed beautifully. A little less useful, to me anyway, are things like Black and White Film effect and the Picture Tubes, which spray preset images into your photos. It, and most of the Picture Frames/Photo Edges, are a little scrapbook-y. I suspect that I can either make or find tubes and edges I prefer, so it's a nice feature to have, even if the out-of-the-box options aren't as useful as one might hope.

Over-all, the core program is very, very good. Unfortunately I can't say the same for the bundled applications. Corel Painter Photo Essentials 4 is a nice try, but still pretty much produces images that look like you've run them through an "Auto-Rembrant" filter or something. They're obviously computer processed photos, and not "stunningly realistic works of art" as Corel suggests. This is yet another application which invites abuse, and yet I will still admit that it's rather amusing to turn on "Auto-Seurat" and watch the dots paint themselves.

However the real turd in the punchbowl is the Project Creator. It's an application intended to allow you to produce things like collages, cards, calendars, slideshows and so forth, and to share them online. Inter-connecting everything is the big Lebowski of computing these days, but unfortunately this application is so incredibly slow right at the get-go, that it's virtually useless. I pointed it at a folder with 120 images, most of them well under a Mb in size, and four minutes later I had 12 thumbnails to look at. I'm sorry but three thumbnails a minute is not an acceptable rate of speed. Also not really acceptable is the fact that every damn time you open this application you have to make the thumbnails all over again! They're not saved anywhere. Does that make any sense, given the time it takes for them to load? I will say that it'll load icon-size images in a few seconds, but those aren't what you're going to be using in your calendar or cards; they're too small. Given this speed issue and the fact that I've had no problem at all sharing my work online, I doubt I'll ever use this application again, and in fact will probably uninstall it now that I know how useless it is to me. (And before anyone asks, because someone always does, I have well over the required resources on my computer to run any of these programs.)

Bottom line is that while there are things about this suite of programs that are awkward or just useless (at least to me) I still like it well enough to give it four stars out of five, and that's saying something. If you're looking for a good, solid image processing program that isn't too spendy, and gives you a lot of bang for your buck, then do take a look at PSPPX3. I think you'll like what you see. Well done, Corel!
