Software Reviews of Corel Painter X [OLD VERSION]

Customer Review: Missing Jeremy Sutton Tutorials
Summary: 4 Stars

This is not so much a review of Painter X as it is of Corel's inability to deliver what it promises in its advertising.

What I am referring to are the Jeremy Sutton video tutorials that are promised as part of the Painter X package. These are clearly mentioned on Amazon's Painter X page as seen as Reason 10 under 'Top 10 Reasons to Buy Corel Painter X'.

In addition, page five (5) of the Painter X manual clearly states that '... Painter X includes a new collection of step-by-step training videos by Corel Master Painter Jeremy Sutton.' My Painter X DVD does not include these tutorials, nor does it include a link to any video tutorials.

I have been working with Amazon in an attempt to get this straightened out. My problem should not be construed as any criticism of the program itself, but only on non-delivery of items promised by Corel. This is my first purchase of any vesion of Painter. Hopefully this will be resolved in the near future.

9/24/07 Update
Today my issue with the Jeremy Sutton videos was resolved.

The problem was that something went wrong with the registration of my copy. This is an automated process other than the user having to enter the correct serial number. I did all of that correctly, but was never given the Corel link to these very good, downloadable videos. Today, a Corel Tech corrected this and my issue has been resolved.

I am extremely pleased with my purchase and the support that I have received from Corel, especially that of Mr. John Derry of Corel, who pin-pointed my problem via email.

Customer Review: fantastic brushes
Summary: 4 Stars

Pros:Tons of brushes to use, like a real painter where you have to dip it in the palette or you can adjust the well to refill your brushes automatically.

Capture pattern feature is great!
Help! Web page links are good and it's easy to find information.
Registering your copy gives you access to some neat little tutorials
The palette: mix your own colors like a real palette
No water or turpentine required, you can noodle around on this program rather than get out the whole kit and caboodle, the photo it, then scan it, then post to a webpage.

Cons: I tend to crash this program every time I use it by having giant canvases and making the brushes really wide. Ordering more computer guts for better performance (my pc had been redone with a new video card 3 mo. prior ect for gaming, so this proggie does take a lot).

The auto paint program is cool for about an hour. Photoshop has better filters and ad ons [eyecandy & alienware]if all you want to do is retouch photos or don't want the extra fancy brushes.

Won't beat ye olde sketchpad and ink for portability, tactile value or having an excuse to go to the art store. Instead of "You spent $10 dollars on ONE sheet of paper!" it will be "You bought a $300 art program AND you STILL need to go to the art store?!"

Customer Review: Gritty, Dirty, Clumpy, Smudgy, and Fantastic!
Summary: 5 Stars

In the past 2D computer art was too perfect. It lacked the hand of the artist, the interesting look only natural media could lend. While not perfect Painter gets as close as you can get without actually having to clean brushes. Colors can be mixed that have variations in tone and color. Paints can mix and smear with underlying color. An airbrush can spit and splatter or be perfectly smooth. Watercolors blend and soak into the paper.

Where Painter really shines is with the use of a graphics tablet like Wacom Wacom Intuos3 6X8 Pen Tablet. You can almost smell the turpentine.

Customer Review: A bigger and better Painting Software
Summary: 5 Stars

Corel Painter IX had me eager to paint.
Author's: Note I wasn't interested in painting until I used Corel Painter IX.
I was pretty much not interested in painting until I saw a promotional offer for Painter IX and an animation software that complemented Painter IX. Now that Painter X had arrived. I downloaded a trial version to see if what is being offered could improve on the already wonderful Painter IX. The feature that caught my eye was Realbristle brushes. They seemed promising. I fooled around with Painter X for a few days following some online tutorials and I got lovely results.

I had been using Painter IX recently and I have been painting for at least a short while so I won't lie and say that it creates the work for you. Online tutorials or being an experienced painter can really help you achieve good results. I mainly use vector software or draw so my painting isn't the best of the best but I'm motivated to learn because of the software's lovely capabilities.

I recommend buying it even if you aren't a professional there are plenty of online tutorials and some community colleges offer non-credit courses in design software usage.

Customer Review: Corel Painter X a family favorite

I purchased Corel painter IX 2+ years ago. I have upgraded to 9.5 and am delighted with the product. It is a genuine pleasure to be able to paint while at my computer .
