Software Reviews of Corel Photo & Video Pro X3 Bundle [Old Version]

Customer Review: Using with Win 7 and it works fine. Not seeing problems others describe.
Summary: 4 Stars

I'm another long time user from JASC days. I already bought and installed this in the original version then bought the upgraded version. I also bought a couple books that were written about it, this version specifically, because I'm not short sighted enough to claim to know how to do everything and my memory is somewhat porous these days and forgetting things is a way of life.

First off, I installed this on a new PC using the latest Intel Core i7 980X 3.3 GHz 6 core processor, 24 GB DDR3 RAM, Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit. I have 2 eVGA GeForce GTX 580 Black Ops video cards with 1536 MB memory each operating in SLI mode. A fact is that graphic processing is a very demanding process.

Here are some complaints I'd like to offer an opinion on:

I see many people panning this program for what they describe as slow operation, over the top memory and resource use, etc. This isn't necessarily a software issue. I installed the basic version of this program on my older PC which has a Pentium 4 @ 2.2 GHz and 2 GB RAM running XP Pro SP3. It ran OK but nothing like on the new PC. In one forum someone said people having problems need to install a bigger hard drive along with the "they are cheap and easy to put in" lecture. Trust me, that will NOT make things run faster unless the installed drive is chock full. A bigger drive is fine, but as cheap as external USB drives are these days, no need to open the computer case unless it's necessary. (I just bought a 2 TB USB/eSATA external drive for $89.00.) The bottom line is maybe your PC is no longer up to the task. An always good fix for slow PCs is add RAM! A great site that will analyze your PC and walk you through everything you need to do and then tell you exactly what you need is Crucial.com. But be aware, especially with Windows 7 all 32 bit versions of the program are limited in how much RAM they can use! Even if you have the room and can buy the modules, the OS (operating system) will not "see" them! Different versions of the Windows 7 64 bit OS have RAM limits as well. Ultimate and Professional are way out there with how much RAM they can use, something like 104 GB. Your PC may run out of slots first! Another thing is even if you have a lot of RAM, if you have a bunch of programs running in the background like virus detection, TiVo server, file monitors and all the other stuff you see in Task Manager (ctrl, alt, and del)ALL are running in RAM. If you have 2 GB RAM and 60% is running back ground tasks you actually have under 1 GB for programs to use. With XP those are all those icons on the left by the clock. If you have several dozen of them, guess what?

Nobody reads them but it is always important to read the tiny little print on software packages or in product descriptions called "Minimum System Requirements". These lay out what the software needs at a minimum to run. If you are at or close to minimum requirements do not expect the software to run right. Oh, it may run, but I promise you will have problems! I am also a PC gamer and I know too well of how being at these minimums means things will not work as you expect or want. "Minimum System Requirements" translates to "This program will install and may actually start! But, it's just a ruse! It will stutter, stall, freeze, hang, crash, and demonstrate every bad behavior known to PCs. Closely meeting these minimum requirements is guaranteed to make you angry and at some point you will entertain notions of throwing your computer out of the window!" The more you exceed the minimums, the better off you will be and the better your PC will run the program.

Some installation and operational problems I have seen with other software using Windows 7 are corrected by doing an "Install as Administrator". I have no interest in providing a Windows guide or tech explanation of this. Just know with Windows 7 if you have trouble installing a program, try installing as an administrator. If a program doesn't run right, uninstall it and reinstall as an administrator. Just because your account type says you are an administrator there are still restrictions and manually telling Windows what to do is necessary. Open the CD/DVD or installation file, find the install icon, right click it and there in that menu is the "Install as Administrator" command. Click it and go. I believe there is also a "Run as Administrator" but I have not used it so I can't comment on it. The whole double administrator thing is a safety thing with Windows 7 because people can get too complacent installing things and even though they may have administrator privelidges, there are times when they need something to make them think about what they are installing. I strongly recommend "The Missing Manual" if you are using Windows 7 because it will explain the ins and outs of Administrator accounts and is a superb, plain language manual indispensable to anyone using Windows 7 regardless of their PC OS savviness. I have probably a dozen problem programs I had difficulty with that either worked fine after re-installing as Administrator or installing them that way after repeated installation failures. I found recommendations online for some programs suggesting they be installed that way from the get-go. I think it bears repeating- educate yourself on Windows 7 and Administrator accounts.

I have read this version of PSP X3 is incompatible with 64 bit Windows 7. I am running it on Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit and have had no crashes, freezes, lock ups, slow downs, etc. or any bad behavior.

I see people saying to go to Adobe Photoshop. I tried Photoshop Elements and it was bare bones compared to PSP. For what I do It wasn't an acceptable alternative and it cost the same and usually more. The full on Adobe Photoshop is still far too expensive for me. A quick price check showed it ranging from the high $400 range to $600. My thinking is for that money upgrade your computer or put it towards a new one. If you shop online there are some deals to be had. A newer better PC will have you thanking yourself. If the problem is an underpowered PC on your part installing a pricey and also demanding program isn't going to help. If anything, it may be worse.

Please read my update at the bottom regarding this. I'm going to leave this in even though I solved the problem. The only thing I don't like about the new PSP is not the fault of PSP as far as I can tell. I retired my old TWAIN scanner and bought a new photo scanner. PSP will not see it. I'm still working on a resolution to that. For now I have to scan into a file using the scanner mfg's software, and then I have to access that folder from PSP. Not a big deal really, but I did become used to scanning from within PSP. There should be a way to get it to work with WIA, but I'm still working on that. That is my only reason for not giving PSP 5 stars. Corel should have understood people like to use one program for interfacing all their hardware into and accommodated them.

Lastly, there are comments that there isn't much different between this X3 version and the last few previous versions. All I can say is that's relative. Sometimes the improvements are made to parts of the program those with that complaint don't use. What's been changed is quite clearly listed and written about on the web site. If you read it and don't see that any of the enhancements and/or changes apply to how you use the software, don't buy the new one! It sounds like some people bought the new version just because it was new and didn't take the time to see if it was worth buying. When no obvious changes were apparent they blamed the software rather than themselves for not researching it first. New does not always mean everything is better or everything that was changed is absolutely necessary in every case. Almost all software is packed with features that most users will never bother with. I can't answer what expectations people had in their minds in the rush to upgrade. It seems to me they get the new version and complain because it doesn't seem immediately new but few really say what it is they are specifically unhappy about with the software itself. As I said already, what they complain about sounds more like hardware problems than software. I bought it because the changes directly affected what I do with the software. I went to Corel's site. I looked. I read. I compared. I shopped for the best price. It's all clearly explained. People forget that not every software improvement is out front and mind bending mind-candy! It may be in the coding or adding new features that some users wanted but others don't need. The complainers remind me of the kids in school who never studied or did homework and then blamed the teachers and the school for their failures. Simple logic says if this product was so bad, so failure prone, and so useless there wouldn't be a market for it. car companies can get away with wrapping the same old stuff in a new package and pass it off as new year after year because appearance is all most look at. With software it's performance and features that matter- not pretty graphics and unusual fonts.

The craziest comments were saying Corel was intentionally making PSP worse so people would stop buying it! That is just so ridiculous! What software company would be so ignorant as to intentionally sully their reputation by intentionally releasing crap and making it worse every year? It's a fact that consumers always blame the company, not just the product, when bad stuff is sold to people. Believe me, if Corel wanted to stop selling PSP, they would just stop selling it and drop it from their catalog. Think again with just a grain of reason and logic- what has really progressed in computing every year? Computers and their processing power! What is the most typical improvement made to all kinds of software? Making use of the increased computer power, increased memory capacity, faster peripherals! What is the most likely thin in the PC/software partnership that will struggle? The less powerful, older machines! Even a few year old PC may suffer trying to run newer software. It happens all the time! Just because you paid a lot of money for your computer 5 years ago and it was damn good in its day doesn't mean it's still top notch today! As a gamer I have suffered through this technical obsolescence time and again over the years! Until I got my new PC I had games that I couldn't even install and others that installed but ran pathetically slow so much they were unplayable. It certainly wasn't the games themselves that were causing the problems. It was a PC that didn't have what it took to run them. And the demand for a more powerful PC has continued to increase. Ask any gamer about the demand of the original Crysis game released in 2007. *0% of PCs when it was new could only run it on extremely reduced settings if it could run at all. Even today it is still a PC humbler. The moral: don't blame the software if you have an economy or old PC and don't know how it stacks against what is needed to run your software.

The people who complain about problems running this program don't share their hardware information. Why? Because they don't understand the relationship between the two. They never checked to see what is needed and it's doubtful most know what they have. I have worked with computers and electronics for 30+ years so I understand many of the problems and can opine on the cause. Some may be trying to run it on a Pentium 3 with 256 MB of RAM and wondering why it won't run right!

Back to what I said about books in regards to explanations and instructions on how to use the software: invest in some! You can never have too much information! The two books I bought together with the small printed manual that came with the upgraded version of PSP X3 contain over 1000 pages of information! While I may not use everything this software can do or use features all the time, I am not foolish enough to believe I "know" everything and am certainly not capable of remembering everything. There again, I question if some actually know the right way to do the things they have trouble with. Drawing on my experience as an electronics and computer tech I can assure people reading this that 90% of problems with computer software based anything are caused by those at the keyboards. Assembly instructions for book cases and baby strollers aren't the only user instructions people like to ignore!

Here's a bit of what I do with my software to put in perspective how I use PSP:

I am restoring old family photos some of which are in bad shape. I scan them, fix them and the go onto disk which get distributed to family members.
I build scale military miniatures. I photography them with a green screen background and then insert the images is various backgrounds to create period correct military photos.
I take photos of my friends and do embarrassing things to them.
I make special effect artsy photos.
I photograph pictures in old books, especially historical photos of military equipment and add them to my private reference archives.
I process pictures for eBay auctions.
I work on photos for friends both fixing still shots. I use still shots and video clips with other software to create DVDs for friends. A favorite is DVDs of their kids participating in school sports activities.
I've processed photographs to use in slide show type DVD presentations for birthdays, anniversaries, weddings, car shows, motorcycle shows, air shows, and other events.
I edit, repair, print, and save to disc my own photographs.
I just fool around with taking pictures, doing things to the pictures both for fun and to practice with and try new things with the software to get a handle on everything that can be done with it.

So, having first bought the plain version of PSP X3 I liked it so well I bought the upgraded version with the bonus software, sold the plain version I had bought, and got a friend to buy a standard version for his projects. I think it's that good I don't hesitate to recommend it.

To recap, I have not had ANY of the problems that others have complained about. Having bought PSP X3 and tried it I would buy it again.

UPDATE: I found out that to associate my scanner, an Epson Perfection V600, with PSP Photo X3 running under Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit I had to do the following: Open Devices and Printers from Control Panel. Right click on the scanner icon. from the menu that opens click on Scan Properties. Next comes the verification window asking for permission to allow the program to make changes to the computer. Click Yes. In the next window that opens click the tab labeled Events. Look to the box at the bottom labeled Action. Select the Start This Program button. (It may already be selected)From the drop down menu to the right of that select Corel Paintshop Photo Pro X3.

After doing all that I can open PSP and the scanner functions under File > Import are no longer grayed out and I can scan directly into PSP. When I press the scan button on the scanner PSP opens and the image is scanned and displayed in it.

Of course, if you use other programs with your scanner one of the selections is to ask which program you want to open with the scanner or you can select a program other than PSP. I prefer PSP as my default image processing program so my setting are perfect for me.

If you have a different scanner I would assume the process is similar and what I described should get you there or awfully close. I should point out that my new scanner does not use a TWAIN driver. So much for another complaint that you can't tie a non-TWAIN scanner in with PSP X3 under Windows 7!
