Corel's PaintShop Pro X3 Limited Edition software is a lot of bang for the buck. Not only does this package include PaintShop Pro X3, which is a fully-featured photo editor, but it also includes several other worthwhile goodies. The package includes Corel Painter Essentials, which is a painting program that can also render photos like fine art. There is a collection of KPT (Kai's Power Tools) which includes several filters for interesting effects and Goo, which allows for very funny transformation of photos. Also included is Corel WinZip 14.5 Pro, which is a fully-featured file compression (zip/unzip) program. As of this date, Corel is updating WinZip Pro to version 15 for free via the updater in the software. WinZip has little to do with photo editing, but it is a valuable add-on for this suite of software programs, particularly if you want to group photos into .zip files and share them with others. Finally, the package also includes a 2 GB USB flash drive. The added goodies in this package are a true bonus. WinZip alone would normally cost another $50 (from Amazon), and a 2 GB USB flash drive is worth another $15-20. So the entire software package is quite a bargain for those who have use for the freebies.

Corel PaintShop Pro X3 is the latest version of what was formerly Jasc PaintShop Pro before Corel bought the brand. PaintShop Pro was originally designed to be a powerful yet simple and user-friendly photo editor for people who did not want to invest the time or money for the industry standard, Adobe Photoshop. Over the years Corel has competed with Adobe with its own popular photo editor, Corel Photo Paint, which was part of the old Corel Draw suite of programs. It is obvious that over time Corel has been trying to infuse PaintShop Pro with some of Photo Paint's powerful editing capabilities. It is now morphed into a powerful but also complex photo editor. Corel has tried to retain its user-friendly nature by keeping some wizards that help guide the novice in editing photos and creating some very interesting and fun effects. Not only can you enhance a digital photo, but you can add picture frames and borders, create collages, cards, and calendars, and add effects such as photo aging, page curling, etc. Many of these features would not be available for Adobe Photoshop without purchasing expensive plug-ins, but Corel throws them in for free. The possibilities for photo manipulation are too lengthy to put in a simple review. Suffice it to say that PaintShop Pro X3 allows you to enhance and transform your photos in ways that are limited only by your imagination.

I installed the programs on a Windows 7 64 bit computer. The installation was far from smooth, and I had to reinstall the software before I could get everything installed correctly. Once installed, though, the programs seemed to work correctly. It does not take long to start up the program, and editing seems to go pretty quickly. My computer has 8 GB of RAM so users with less memory in their system may have a different experience. Running Windows 7 64 bit does not seem to pose any problems with the software, and Corel advertises it to be Windows 7 32 and 64 bit compatible. I checked for needed software updates, but as of the date of this review none were needed.

The main program can be extensively configured for everyone's taste, allowing it to be tailored for either the seasoned pros or simplified for new users. The background for the program is black, though, which makes it extremely difficult to read some of the smaller print on the menus. As best I can tell there is no way to change this in the preferences menu. A white background, or one that could be changed to other colors, would have been much better. The software easily jumps from the simple wizards to the detailed controls, and there is easy access to the photo organizer for selecting photos. PaintShop Pro X3 uses standard Adobe Photoshop plug-ins for added effects, and multiple plug-in folders can be added for use with the software.

For all the power contained within PaintShop Pro X3 there is a downside. The software is extremely complex, even for someone like me who is used to manipulating photos with Adobe Photoshop. A printed manual is included, but it offers only skeletal information about using the main features of the software and it is far from all inclusive. Most of the really powerful capabilities of PaintShop Pro X3 are not explained at all in the manual. Creating calendars and many of the more fun applications of PaintShop Pro X3 are barely mentioned, if at all, and their usage is not explained in the manual. More detailed help is available online, but this is a hassle. Printed manuals are becoming a rarity as companies try to limit their costs, but a comprehensive online manual with the software would have been more useful than what was provided. Right now there are very few third party books available to help fill in these gaps.

In summary, Corel PaintShop Pro X3 is a fully-featured photo editor that would meet the needs of both the novice and the more advanced user. It is not intended or priced to compete with Adobe Photoshop which is still the industry standard for professional photo editing. But for a much lower price PaintShop Pro X3 offers a lot of power and fun for everyone. It offers plenty of photo editing features for most everyone but the most demanding professional. I docked it two stars, though, because software this complex needs to have much better documentation provided. Owners should not have to purchase additional books or go online to learn how to use it. Amazon is currently selling this product for $49, which is an absolute steal for a package like this. Even if you end up buying a third party book to learn how to use it you will still be getting a great bargain.
