The software would be acquired by Corel who were known for software such as WordPerfect, Quattro Pro, Painter, CorelDRAW and Corel would continue to acquire other companies such as ULEAD and InterVideo and the company has since released image and video editing software packages for the consumers who do not want to spend close to a thousand dollars on software and thus priced around the $100 range for Corel PaintShop Photo Pro X3 and Corel VideoStudio Pro X3 and for the Ultimate edition ("Corel PaintShop Photo & Video Ultimate Bundle"), priced around the $130-$150 range. The software is for Windows XP, Windows 7 and Windows Vista.
The ultimate version of the software comes with:

- Corel VideoStudio Pro X3
- KPT Collection Plug-Ins
- Corel Painter Essentials 4
- Full Printed User Manuals
It's important to note that if purchased online (from Corel), Corel also offers WinZip Pro as an additional bonus software.
I. PaintShop Photo Pro X3 Ultimate
Software installation for PaintShop Photo Pro X3 Ultimate was quite easy and one of the positives for basic to even pro photographers is they can incorporate their RAW images and adjust them while loading. Using the enhanced organizer, you can load, find, view and edit photos. For those familiar with PhotoShop, PixelMator or even FireWorks can easily figure out the software and the tool bar especially the windows to work with layering and editing. But those who have never used an image editing software may find it a bit difficult at first and I highly recommend purchasing a learn-to book on PaintShop Pro.
The latest software includes a smart cover to remove objects, raw lab for those who work with hi-res images from their DSLR cameras and also it comes with editing tools for effects, depth of field and probably one of the biggest selling points is the inclusion of Kai Power Tools, a popular plug-in that was utilized a lot back in the '90s for Adobe PhotoShop to achieve liquid-based effects and other other type of effects.
You also get a project creator to make photo books, calendars, business cards, etc. Also, the ability to print at home, order professional prints and even send photos up to Facebook, Flickr and YouTube.
As mentioned, installation of the software went very well. But I did test a few images from smaller to higher resolution photos. It's important to mention that 1GB of Ram is possible, 2GB is recommended. I've read that a few reviewers had problems with crashing software. I didn't have as many problems on XP with 2GB in terms of crashing but I did notice that when you start working on large projects, there is a bit of slowdown and this where more memory would have better been used. In fact, one thing I would want to test later on is if I did not install this on my main HD and installed on an external HD, if there would be performance differences. As for the photo organizer, I didn't think it was that bad. I have used Adobe Bridge for photo organizing in the past and if you go through a folder, all images are going to show up (JPG, PNG, BMP, etc.). I understand if you want to localize it to a certain type of image and I suppose that would have been a good way to set in the preferences to focus on JPG files. But the organizer is very important for those who take a lot of photos and want to view it all, catalog, rename it, preview them through various thumbnails. Easy to use.
Photofix was fine in adjusting levels for a photo. Want to enhance brightness, contrast, shadows or other details, you can do it. So, you can have really good controls over the basics for an image. For me, I tend to want more control, especially when it comes to creating photo objects (cutting out backgrounds from objects), especially when messing around hue and combining multiple image layers but for those who just need the basic controls with more bells and whistles compared to other budget software, PaintShop Pro X3 is great.
If you are going to be working a lot with image editing projects, I do highly recommend having an external hard drive to work with because multiple layer projects at 300DPI or higher is going to eat up resources. Especially recommending it for the next software I will be discussing next...
II. VideoStudio Pro X3
When it comes to video, as mentioned, I'm a little more hands on and used to Apple or Adobe products for high end video editing. But for those working in HD, this software does allow to import from standard def and Hi-Def formats. You can easily edit your video and place audio in various parts of the video which is standard but it's important to note that in some ways, it reminded me when I first started working with iMovie a long time ago and messing around various videos and experimenting through trial and error. For those familiar with video editing, you'll quickly get VideoStudio Pro X3 down but for beginners. I don't know... this may be a bit advanced for them but similar to PaintShop Pro X3, I recommend a book to teach the basics step-by-step.
You do get to add credits, titles, pans, zooms and other effects as well. Also including NewBlue FX filters during key framing and for a video editing program, these effects work rather nicely. There is one thing that I wish that Corel did focus on and that is extending external software packages for people who own this software to incorporate more different fades, black and white filters, letterbox filters and just more effects. If anything, just an additional package that can be purchased to enhance the video editing experience through various visual effects. I'm not expecting Adobe Premiere or Final Cut Pro type or Motion/Adobe After Effects type of additions but just something extra for those who invested in the software.
I've read other reviews of people's experience with this software and this is my biggest advice with video editing. You can use your main harddrive BUT I would never recommend it. I would do all video editing on an external harddrive. In fact, the more serious you are about video editing, it's important to have an external harddrive just for video editing. I can tell you right now that I've done a lot of video editing and I have ended the life of many hard drives. You work on your main HD, it's going to slow down everything. In fact, when you are done and exporting a video, it eats up a lot of memory resources that your HD will be working. If you want to play it safe, get an external HD for working on your video projects (and external HD's are cheaper now).
But other than that, I was pretty impressed by the software and how much is included with it. It's important to note that the software also comes with Painter Essentials 4. For painting of photos, I have been using Corel Painter for years now and for beginners, especially for those who want to tinker with images and give a painted look and feel, they will enjoy the addition of this software.
JUDGMENT CALL:
"Corel PaintShop Photo & Video Ultimate Bundle" is actually a pretty good software for all the bells and whistles it comes with. I've read a few other reviews on here who were critical about the slowdown and crashing but I can tell you that even with the more expensive Adobe software, I have had issues with those just as well, so no image and video editing software is immune to slowdown and crashing even if you have a powerful system.
But I do recommend beginners to search for books that teach you step-by-step instructions which will help you become familiar with the software. For those familiar with Adobe products, it's a similar interface that you can pick up on but not as efficient. But considering it's price and what is offered, it's really hard to criticize because I can easily work with this software (for me, I need more control thus I use the higher end software).
But I'm going to emphasize that for anyone who does purchase this software and wants to really get into it and do multiple projects or even get into professional projects, I recommend purchasing an external HD. If you are going to import videos to VideoStudio Pro X3, DO NOT work from your main HD. You shouldn't be doing that. I've learned from personal experience of ending the life of many hard drives and now I use two external harddrives. One for video editing and one for my image-based projects (which I do create for a monthly magazine, books, calendars, outdoor advertisements) and it has been the best thing I have done to make work much more efficient.
Also, another thing to prevent slowdown is for some people is to not add every font in your fonts folder, use a software to activate and deactivate fonts like Extensis Fusion which should also prevent from eating up memory.
But overall, after having tested this software, for all that comes with it and for its price point, it's hard to complain. It's not going to be as robust as the higher end software but for those who want to get into image editing and video editing and don't want to spend a thousand bucks for it, for the budget conscious, this software will suit you nicely.
